Library’s Fellowship of the Walk fitness challenge event set Oct. 23

October 18, 2021

The Rehoboth Beach Public Library is hosting a health and fitness challenge called Fellowship of the Walk.

Participants will attempt to walk the same distance as Sam and Frodo from J. R. R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings.” They will see how they compare to Tolkien’s characters as they begin their own 1,779-mile journey from the Shire to Mount Doom.

This challenge will mirror the timetable in the books, concluding on the day that Frodo destroyed the Ring: March 25.

Along the way they will collect badges for accomplishments - each one more precious and representative of a milestone on the trek to Mount Doom.

Everyone’s miles will be tracked through Beanstack. To access Beanstack, go to https://sussexcountyde.beanstack.org/reader365 and log into an account or create a new account.

Prizes will be awarded to the top walkers in March. The library will host several events, starting with the Rivendell Roundup from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 23.

Whether just starting the journey or checking progress, participants can take a walk at their own pace and meet at the library for information and to compare journeys.

A scavenger hunt sheet of landmarks is available at the library. Rehoboth Beach Public Library is located at 226 Rehoboth Ave.  in Rehoboth Beach.
