Library program keeps kids in stitches

Students learn sewing, mending skills
May 22, 2019

Students in a sewing class hosted by Lewes Public Library celebrated the last class of the year May 3 by creating a bejeweled felt flower as a Mother’s Day gift.

For the second year, local homeschool students ages 6 to 15 have attended the Children Learn to Sew program, learning basic sewing skills and completing seasonal or holiday projects.

Program coordinator Amanda Olewiler said students have learned back, running, stem and split stitches; French knots; and how to sew on a button. Students have made teddy bears, potholders, dolls and animals.

“We have had many donations of fabrics and other supplies, and this year children who don't own a sewing machine will be given one to take home,” Olewiler said.

Olewiler said library volunteers, community members and New Life Thrift Shop donated sewing machines for students.

The Children Learn to Sew program runs January through May. Call Lewes Public Library at 302-645-2733.
