Lloyd’s Market a staple of Lewes since 1971

There are few things synonymous with Lewes, but Lloyd’s Market is certainly one of them. Lloyd and Dottie Purcell took ownership of the IGA on Savannah Road on Nov. 19, 1971. Based on the vehicles shown, this photograph was likely made sometime around that time. Over the last 51-plus years, Lloyd’s has staved off the big chain grocery stores around Lewes and continues to be a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. The business continues to be family owned and operated in the same small, compact building at the corner of Savannah Road and Manila Avenue. The building goes back to about the turn of the century. Before the Purcell family, the store was operated by Frank Robinson for 30 years. 

Behind Lloyd’s in this image is Moore Chevrolet Sales Co., which was operated by R. Edward Moore Jr., whose wife Anna Beebe Moore was the daughter of Dr. Richard Beebe, co-founder of Beebe Healthcare. Edward Moore served as president of the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and Lewes Fire Department. The dealership lot is now home to Pivot Physical Therapy and Beebe Healthcare offices.
