Loose and Luminous Watercolor class online July 23

July 15, 2020

Milton Arts Guild will offer a class on Loose and Luminous Watercolor with instructor Gerilyn Gaskill from 10 a.m. to noon, Thursday, July 23, via Zoom. Class fee is $20 per person.

Gaskill said painting loosely, “wet in wet,” creates a look like no other. When wet paint meets wet paper, wonderful things start to happen, especially in depicting skies and water. Many view this technique as letting go, since control is tricky. The class highlights this method, building depth in paintings as they slowly dry, incorporating “lifting” and “masking” skills, keeping the whites to create a classic Delaware marsh scene.

This class is for beginner and intermediate-level painters.

Participants will need 8-by-10-inch or larger pieces of good-quality watercolor paper (taped or mounted on support board); round, flat, fan and Baker’s brushes, plus a Rigger (liner) brush; water container; paper towels; sea sponge; liquid masking fluid; drawing notebook; small misting spray bottle; water container; pencil; and kneaded eraser. One’s regular palette of chosen colors may be used with yellow ocher and raw sienna added for sky effects.

Gaskill’s passion is capturing the beauty of the Delaware coastline and Delmarva landscapes in watercolor, oil and acrylics. Her interest in art started in kindergarten, helped along by her great-grandfather, artist August Seiler, who also painted coastal imagery. Her aunt Sheryl Woods of Lewes also helped cultivate her love of art throughout her life, especially in plein air. Her goal is to capture the here and now before it’s forgotten. She paints the changing time, a visual history that stirs viewers’ memories.
