Lunch With a Purpose benefits Shepherd’s Office

January 30, 2023

Lunch With a Purpose brought together 200 people Jan. 4, at Signatures at Bayside in Selbyville, in support of The Shepherd’s Office, a 501c3 nonprofit organization in Georgetown.

Lunch With a Purpose Director Cheryl Mitchell delivered the financial news that since September, for the current 2022-23 season, $49,893 has been raised in cash and in-kind donations. Also 3,774 pounds of food have been donated to local charities and food banks.

Shepherd’s Office Director Jim Martin delivered impassioned remarks about the work his organization does to support the homeless, the working poor, teenagers coming out of foster care, and anyone who needs help. The Shepherd’s Office supplies free clothes, especially important in the cold months, and provides free hot meals to everyone in need.

In November alone 3,135 meals were served to 1,542 people. During all of 2022, 20,000 free meals were provided to those in need along with 30,000 bottles of water. Food is donated, and much of the hot food is prepared by volunteers and delivered in slow cookers to The Shepherd’s Office. The Jan. 4 luncheon raised $7,300 along with $7,000 worth of in-kind donations for The Shepherd’s Office. A total of 908 pounds of canned goods was collected for the Food Bank of Delaware.

The Laurel Public Library will be the beneficiary of the Thursday, Feb. 2 event at Heritage Shores in Bridgeville.
