On Tuesday night, in Orlando, Fla., Donald Trump launched his re-election campaign against Hillary Clinton. Trump repeatedly attacked Clinton. His supporters repeatedly chanted: “Lock her up!”
Such a chant is about as retro as a Hooters restaurant. It’s understandable, though. People often enjoy reliving their glory days.
But a local expression of this obsession with Hillary Clinton and the past was among the most disturbing things I’ve ever read in the Cape Gazette.
In the June 14 paper, a self-described “old lady” told of her experience walking at Cape Henlopen State Park.
Enjoying the day, she smiled and greeted a group of 15 middle-aged men on bicycles. After several of the men rode past her saying “Lock her up,” she realized her mistake – if you could call it a mistake. She was wearing a Hillary hat. She said she rarely wore political messages in public, but that will be the last time. She doesn’t want to feel “unsafe.”
Did these men not understand their comments could be intimidating to a woman walking by herself? Or was that their intention? Would they want their mothers, wives and daughters treated this way? Yes, I suppose these middle-aged men had a free speech right to make fun of an old woman.
But I would hope those so committed to the nation’s past would practice a little old-fashioned courtesy.
