A 72-year-old man is in critical condition after he was struck by a car Nov. 7 near the Safeway on Route 1. The driver of the car faces a driving under the influence charge, police say.

The man was walking through the parking lot near Safeway at 6 p.m. attempting to cross an access road when a woman, 50, driving a 2006 Toyota Camry failed to see him and hit the man with the left front of the car, said Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe of the Delaware State Police.

The impact thrust the man into the middle of the access road; the Camry continued driving west before coming to a stop, Jaffe said.

The man, who was wearing a red raincoat while walking in a dimly lit area, was taken to Beebe Healthcare and later transferred to Christiana Hospital where he is listed in critical condition, Jaffe said.

Melissa F. Nearing of Greenbelt, Md., was properly restrained and she was uninjured. Police charged her with driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its investigation into this incident. Anyone with information pertaining to this crash is asked to contact Detective N. DeMalto at 302-703-3267.
