A 66-year-old Harrington man died July 7 after police say he drove off Route 1 and crashed.
The crash was reported at 5:17 a.m. when a passing motorist saw a 2001 Volvo V70 station wagon in a field near Truitt Road, said Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe of the Delaware State Police.
Jaffe said the Volvo was traveling northbound on Route 1 approaching the intersection of Truitt Road when the car exited the roadway, striking a sign post. After impacting the sign post, she said, the car continued to travel in a northeasterly direction before colliding with a standing tree in an open field. The car stopped a short distance from the tree.
The driver, Robert C. Campbell, was not wearing his seatbelt, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene, Jaffe said.
Route 1 northbound in the area of Truitt Road was restricted to one lane while the crash was investigated and cleared.
The crash continues to remain under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information pertaining to this incident is asked to contact Troop 7, Cpl. A. Mitchell at 302-644-5020.
