May 18, 2019

A 55-year-old Rehoboth Beach man died May 17 after police say he walked in front of a car on Route 1 near Rehoboth.

The man was not in a designated crosswalk, and he was wearing dark clothing when he crossed the northbound lanes of Route 1 at 11:09 p.m., Friday, May 17, said Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe of the Delaware State Police.

The man, who also had no reflective material on his clothing and was not carrying a light, continued walking westbound across the southbound lane near Rehoboth Avenue Ext. when he walked directly in front of a 1993 Oldsmobile driven southbound by a man, 42, of Mohnton, Pa., Jaffe said.

The car struck the man, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene. His name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin. The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident.
