Man removed from Rehoboth apartment after three-hour standoff

January 7, 2019

A man barricaded himself in a Rehoboth apartment room Jan. 7, yelling and banging on the walls, before police removed him three hours later.

Rehoboth Beach police were called at 1 a.m. to an apartment in the 100 block of Rehoboth Avenue to check the welfare of a suicidal subject located inside an apartment building, which led to a barricade situation, said Lt. Jaime Riddle of the Rehoboth Beach Police Department. The man was heard yelling and beating on the walls when police arrived, and he made some concerning statements, Riddle said.

Several other agencies responded after a report of possible weapons or explosives on the scene. The building was evacuated, and by 4 a.m., Riddle said, the man surrendered and exited his apartment. The man, who was not identified by police, was taken into custody without incident or injury; he was taken to Beebe Healthcare for evaluation, Riddle said.

No weapons or explosives were found, and no charges have been filed at this time, Riddle said.
