A man broke into Woody’s Dewey Beach about 2:45 a.m., July 7, and stole beer, the night’s cash and a $500 cash change bag, owner Jimmy O’Conor said.
Video surveillance first shows the burglar hiding the back of his head by pulling his shirt above his head.
The intruder strolls through the restaurant kitchen, grabs two 6-packs of Red Stripe beer, sets them down and enters a closed office door. He then emerges from the room and shuts the door behind him.
Dewey Beach Sgt. Cliff Dempsey said the suspect is a white man about 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall with brown hair and a chinstrap beard. He was wearing a light-colored short-sleeve, button-down shirt and light-colored long pants.
O’Conor said the intruder pried open the back door with a bar from a realtor’s sign to enter to the restaurant. O’Conor said the the man walked around the dark kitchen for about five minutes and did not enter the lighted seating area. He also drank several Red Stripe beers while in the restaurant, and left an empty bottle in the neighbor’s back yard. Police are currently running the fingerprints, O’Conor said.
“The community has been amazing in getting the word out,” O’Conor said. “Everyone has been wonderful. I’m just shocked no one has identified him yet. The video has been shared over 3,000 times.”
Since Woody’s and O’Conor have posted the surveillance video, locals and visitors have launched a massive social media effort to find the intruder.
Anyone who recognizes the man on video surveillance or knows anything about the burglary is asked to call Dewey Beach Police at (302) 227-1110 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) TIP-3333.
