Mariner and Beacon students head to state math competition April 9

Math League students from Beacon and Mariner middle schools recently competed in the regional competition sponsored by the Delaware Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Seventh-grade teams from Beacon placed first and third in the region. For individual scores, Rosemary Spiezio placed second and Mackenzie Burns placed third.

Beacon’s eighth-grade team won first place. Abby Betts was the highest scorer in the region, and by herself, she outscored four of the teams in the region. Ryan Pickard and Evan Sydnor tied for the second-highest score. Declan Morrisey, along with Mariner team members Mason Steingebre, Jai Qi Xie and Ava Azato, all tied for the third-highest scores in the region.

Mariner’s eighth-grade team placed second and will head to the state competition Tuesday, April 9, in Dover, along with with the two first-place teams from Beacon.

The Delaware Council of Teachers of Mathematics comprises teachers from public and private schools in elementary, secondary and university classrooms. Members include both practicing and retired teachers.
