Mariner girls fall to Postlethwait in tight game

January 18, 2019

The Mariner Middle girls’ basketball team lost a 16-7 third-quarter lead, as the Riders scored 11 unanswered points in their 19-16 victory over the Vikings.

Jayla Johnson led the Lady Vikings with four points. Shaniya Miller and Morgan Newcomb added three points each. Mackinzie Brown, Cailyn Bledsoe and Jessica Ashley each hit for a deuce.

Mariner took a 9-2 lead into the locker room at halftime and scored seven in the third to the Riders’ five. Postlethwait turned up the pressure to shut down the Vikings in the fourth.

“Our team started off strong in the first half, but missed layups and turnovers killed us in the second half,” said Mariner coach Katie Tingle. “It’s fun coaching these girls and watching them improve each game. Even though we lost the lead, they never gave up.”

The Vikings will travel to Sussex Academy Wednesday, Jan. 23, to take on the Seahawks.
