Marion Brewington, master gardener

September 27, 2022

Marion Brewington (French, Sharp, Truitt, Brewington), our devoted matriarch, went to her heavenly reward Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022, peacefully at home at the age of 84.

Marion was born on Sept. 9, 1938, in Milford, daughter of John H. and Ruby (Best) French. She graduated from Milford High School in June 1956.

In addition to raising her three children, she worked at Delaware State Highway Department, JC Penney Co. in Milford, and the State of Delaware Juvenile Corrections-Stevenson House in Milford, retiring from Stevenson House in June 1991. She truly enjoyed her work there, the children, and especially the staff. They worked together as a family unit and remained close in friendship.

Never one to sit still, in retirement Marion enjoyed happy years working for both Warner’s Produce and Hill’s Produce. Wherever she went, she left an impact and made many lasting friendships. She loved being a master gardener in both Kent and Sussex counties, to whom she dedicated more than 20 years of her time and service, and she loved every minute of it. God was an integral part of her life. At an early age, she joined Sardis United Methodist Church, but spent her last years deeply devoted to Long Neck Methodist Church in Millsboro.

She enjoyed her family greatly and was thrilled for everyone to gather for a meal. Also, gardening was very special to her, especially her vegetables and flowers. Being able to can and freeze her products made her happy, as well as being able to share the bounty. She will be remembered for her work ethic, love of God and family, and her dedication to doing things the right way!

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ruby French; her brother, Jack French; her foster brother, Joe Penuel; her husbands, James Truitt and George Brewington; and her stepdaughter, Valerie Rogers.

She is survived by her three children: Deborah Davis, Shirley (Jay) Walls and Richard Sharp; three stepchildren, J.B. Rogers, Eddie (Kim) Brewington and Cindy Brewington-Dare; 12 grandchildren: Kyle Davis, Daniel (Logan Pavlik) Walls, Jamie (John) Eller, Lauren (Stacey) Webb, Jennifer (Blake) Buckner, Nicole Sharp, Kelly (T.C.) Montague, Christine (David) Broadwater, Heather Hudson, George Brewington, Emily (Chris) Kotzian, and Olivia Dare; 16 great-grandchildren: Rylei and Stella Webb, Gavin and Logan Walls, Bella, Declan and Luka Buckner, James Pettitt, Jonah, Samuel, Benjamin, and Owen Montague, Dylan and Alyssa Layfield, William Brewington, and Hunter Kotzian; and one great-great-granddaughter, Skyla Hall. She is also survived by a devoted sister-in-law, Phyllis French; nephew, David French; niece, Rita Wells, and their families; many other family members, extended family, and close friends.

Funeral services will be held at noon, Friday, Sept. 30, at Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 N.W. Front St., Milford. A time of visitation for family and friends will begin at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Milford Community Cemetery.

Flowers are accepted, or a donation in memory of Marion can be made to Kent County Master Gardeners Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 136 Woodside, DE 19980.
