Mary K. Hughes, devout Catholic

Mary K. Hughes, 88, of Dagsboro, formerly of Hyattsville, Md., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2019 at the Country Rest Home in Greenwood.

Mary was born in Washington, D.C., Feb. 14, 1931, daughter of the late George Franklin Hughes and Esther Madeline (Richard) Hughes.  She obtained her bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Maryland and her RN from the Georgetown School of Nursing.  Mary worked for over 40 years as a registered nurse for Louis J. Goffredi and Fred R. Sanderson, two surgeons in the Washington, D.C. area before her retirement.  

She was deeply devoted to the Catholic Church where she attended daily Mass and faithfully prayed the rosary.  Mary also loved the theater and the arts as she volunteered countless hours at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., as an usher.  Mary retired to the beach in 2001, where she became involved in her community as a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, the Lord Baltimore Lioness, South Coastal AARP and the Red Hat Society.

Mary will be best remembered for her generosity to her extended family. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Madeline Harvey and her husband George; two brothers, George Hughes and his wife Maydie and James Hughes; and a brother-in-law, Jerome Timmons.  Mary is survived by a brother, John Hughes and his wife Helen of Bala Cynwyd, Pa.; a sister, Margaret A. Timmons of Silver Spring, Md.; a sister-in-law, Ann Hughes of Vienna, Va., and several loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.  

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 3, at St. Ann Catholic Church, 691 Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach, where friends and family may call after 10 a.m.  A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring. 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Mary’s name to St. Ann Catholic Church, 691 Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach, DE 19930.
