Mary ‘Marie’ Peterson, retired cook

Mary “Marie” Peterson slipped quietly into enteral rest Wednesday, May 27, 2020.

Marie began her journey among us May 31, 1941. She was the daughter of the late Gladys Finney Coon and the late Melvin Sunkett Sr. She lived in Lewes most of her life. She was educated in the Sussex school district. She was a member of Trinity Faith Christian Center, Lewes.

She worked in several restaurants as a short-order cook. She loved her children dearly, and was known as Rebabe. One of her favorite gospels that she often sang was “I Feel Like Going On.”

She was preceded in death by her husband Eugene Peterson Sr.; her sons, Eugene Peterson Jr. and James A. Peterson; her sister Allene Carter; and two brothers, Melvin Sunkett Jr. and Lester Sunkett.

Cherishing her fondest memories are three daughters, Earlene “Dolly” Colon of Salisbury, Md., Barbara Waples (Hurley) of Virginia Beach, Va., and Matresa Peterson of Salisbury; one son, Archie “Butchie” (Pearl Darlene) of Lincoln; eight grandchildren: Erlinda Colon, Jermaine Griffin, Robert Colon Jr., Jamarr and Hurley Waples, Erik Singletary, James Peterson, and Darius Bradley; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Rev. Margaret Jones (Bishop Arthur D.) of Lewes; one sister-in-law, Josephine Moore of Quitman, Ga.; one brother, Randolph Sunkett (Karen) of Lewes; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, June 3. A viewing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m, at Trinity Faith Christian Center, 15516 New Road, Lewes. Service will be private.
