Maryland man extradited and charged with murder

November 1, 2021

A Maryland man faces a murder charge in connection with the shooting death of a woman in Ocean View.

Jason R. Meredith, 38, of Hebron, was extradited back to Delaware Oct. 29 where he was charged with second-degree murder, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and first-degree reckless endangering. Meredith was arraigned through Justice of the Peace Court 2 videophone and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $226,000 cash-only bond.

An autopsy performed on Cheryl Beckett-Brown, 55, determined the cause and manner of death as homicide by gunshot wound.

Police were called to a Bethany Crest home Oct. 21 in response to a shooting report when they found Beckett-Brown shot. The investigation revealed both Beckett-Brown and a 53-year-old female roommate were inside the residence when Meredith came to the house and began shooting into it.

Police determined Meredith had fled in a vehicle, and after a alert was sent out in Delaware and Maryland, a deputy with the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office located the vehicle driving erratically westbound on Route 50 in the area of Tilghman Road. The deputy continued to follow the truck to a residence in Hebron where the suspect was taken into custody without incident by Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office and Maryland State Police.

Meredith was transported to Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office where he was arrested on an out-of-state fugitive warrant and was held in the Wicomico County Detention Center until his extradition to Delaware.
