A Maryland woman has died after she was critically injured July 4 while crossing Coastal Highway in South Bethany on her bicycle.
Kelly M. Scruggs, 27, died July 6, succumbing to injuries sustained during the crash, said Master Cpl. Michael Austin of the Delaware State Police.
Scruggs, 27, was riding her bike at 10:16 p.m. westbound across the median of Coastal Highway when she continued across the southbound lanes, Austin said.
As she crossed, Austin said, she rode directly into the path of a 2005 Toyota Sienna driven by a Pennsylvania man, 50. The Sienna struck the cyclist on the right side, knocking her to the pavement. After impact, Austin said, the Toyota came to an immediate stop and remained at the scene.
The cyclist was initially transported to Beebe Healthcare before being transferred to Christiana Hospital, Austin said. The woman was not wearing a helmet and had no functioning lights on the bicycle, he said.
The driver of the Toyota was uninjured, Austin said, adding impairment on his behalf is not deemed a factor in the collision. Charges have not been filed.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Sgt. A. Mendez of the Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit by calling 302-703-3269, or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or http://www.delaware.crimestoppersweb.com.
