Two Millville men wearing cloth face coverings robbed a couple April 24 in Selbyville, seriously injuring one.
Ryan T. Crowson and Tanner C. McElwee, both 22, were in the parking lot of the Hickory Tree Apartments at 10:16 p.m. when they approached a couple and demanded money, said Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe of the Delaware State Police.
The man, 25, was struck in the head and face with a handgun; the woman gave them an undisclosed amount of cash, and then Crowson and McElwee ran off, Jaffe said. The woman, who was not injured, drove the injured man to an area hospital where he was admitted with serious injuries, she said.
Through further investigation, Jaffe said, police identified Crowson and McElwee as suspects. On May 11, she said, Crowson was taken into custody at the DMV in Georgetown. Police took McElwee into custody near his residence in the unit block of Tributary Lane, Millville, Jaffe said. A search was conducted at the home, she said, and the handgun police said was used in this incident was recovered.
Crowson and McElwee were transported back to Troop 4 where they were charged with first-degree robbery and second-degree conspiracy. McElwee was also charged with first-degree assault, aggravated menacing and weapons charges. Both men were arraigned and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of bond – Crowson on $22,000 secured, and McElwee on $75,000 cash.
