McQuay’s Market was a longtime staple at the entrance to Rehoboth Beach, welcoming locals and visitors with a wide variety of items from which to choose.

McQuay’s was opened by William “Butch” McQuay in 1937. By the time Cape Gazette founder and publisher Dennis Forney talked to him for a 1994 column, McQuay was 86 years old. He grew up in St. Michaels, Md., the son of a grocer.

When McQuay died in 1997, the business was purchased by Paul and Cindy Lovett. They demolished the original McQuay's structure in 2006 and replaced it with a building as close as possible. After McQuay’s ceased operations, the location was home to a few markets – and even an annex for the Rehoboth Art League – but none could capture the same magic. In 2016, Egg opened with a whole new concept, offering breakfast and lunch daily, and it has been successful ever since.
