April 10, 2022

Two Millsboro men face charges after a shooting April 9 in the Oak Orchard area.

Delaware State Police responded to a reported shooting at 6:42 p.m. in the 28000 block of Mount Joy Road and learned that two neighbors had verbally argued with each other which escalated into a shooting, said Sgt. Heather Pepper of the Delaware State Police. Both Curtis Collick, 36, and Clayton Sample, 47, fired multiple gunshots at each other, Pepper said.

Collick was struck one time in the lower torso area and fled in a vehicle prior to police arrival, she said. Troopers responding to the scene observed Collick’s vehicle and stopped him, before an EMS vehicle arrived and transported him to an area hospital, Pepper said. He was treated for a nonlife-threatening injury and released. Sample was uninjured; he was taken into custody without incident at the scene and transported to Delaware State Police Troop 4.

Collick was charged with felonies – possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, and first-degree reckless endangering. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $152,000 cash bond.

Sample was charged with felony first-degree assault, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in default of $130,000 cash bond.
