Metropolitan Opera’s ‘Marnie’ to be shown Nov. 24, 26

November 21, 2018

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society will present the Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD broadcast of Nico Muhly’s “Marnie” at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 24, and 1 p.m, Monday, Nov. 26.  Screenings are held at the Cinema Art Theater and shown as recorded presentations after being filmed live.

Composer Nico Muhly unveils his second new opera for the Met with this gripping reimagining of Winston Graham’s novel, set in the 1950s, about a beautiful, mysterious young woman who assumes multiple identities. Director Michael Mayer and his creative team have devised a fast-moving cinematic world for this exhilarating story of denial and deceit, which also inspired a film by Alfred Hitchcock. Mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard sings the enigmatic Marnie, and baritone Christopher Maltman is the man who pursues her, with disastrous results. Robert Spano conducts.

“Marnie” is a musical-dramatic vision of a troubled character in a flawed society, with both the individual and the social milieu concealing inner turbulence behind sophisticated façades. The libretto unfolds naturalistically, and the music explores the themes set forth in the source material in a direct and often seductively beautiful manner.

In addition to the opera performance, the HD series features Met opera stars conducting live interviews with cast and/or production crew members while showing behind-the-scenes workings. This production is the fourth in The Metropolitan Opera: Live in HD series for the 2018-19 season.

Admission for The Met: Live in HD broadcasts is $25 for adults; $22 for RBFS members, Met members, and seniors 65 and over; and $15 for students with ID and children 12 and under. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater 30 minutes before the screening.
