Mike Wardian and Arwyn Becker win Summer’s End 5K

189 runners complete the course

The Dewey Beach Summer's End 5K contested Sept. 5 attracted 189 runners. 

Mike Wardian, 47, the congenial crazy guy and world-renowned ultra runner who now lives part time in Rehoboth, led the entire race, winning in a time of 17:37.  

“Not too bad for coming off injury and the type of training I’ve been doing,” Wardian said. “I’m happy with that performance.” 

Elliot Parsons, 40, of West Chester, Pa., was second overall and first masters runner in 19:00. 

Mark McCaffrey, 45, also from West Chester, was third overall in 19:12. 

Arwyn Becker, 36, of Norfolk, Va., was first woman overall in 19:26. Megan Venables, 28, of Princeton, N.J., was fifth overall and second female in 19:50. 

Alison McCann, 47, of Lincoln University, Pa., was 10th overall and first in female masters in 20:32 

Among the top 25 finishers, just three were from Delaware, including Wardian, Beau Croll, 20th in 22:00, and Scott Craig, 23rd in 22:28. 

The top females from the First State were Mary Wennberg, 42nd in 24:54, and Meg Burich, 51st in 26:02. 

The 45th annual Gary P. Lister Bottle & Cork 10-Miler/5K is set for Saturday, Sept. 11. Race time is 7:30 a.m. for the 10-miler and 7:40 for the 5K.
