Milton Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved the final site-plan for Milton Fire Department to build an addition and renovate its Front Street station. On the table since October, the project received approval April 16.

Department President Johnny Hopkins said the department can now apply for building permits. He said the department plans to break ground in late-May or early-June and construction on the $4 million project is expected to last 12 to 14 months.

The project includes two new bays on the Front Street side, an expanded events hall on the second floor, rebuilt vehicle bays in the rear of the building and a new gable roof. The facility will have new break rooms, a lounge, a fitness room and a meeting and training room.

Hopkins said he was happy to complete the planning phase and begin to close in on construction. The department will remain open while construction is ongoing. “It feels good to get started,” he said.

The department will go before town council on Monday, May 6, to seek a waiver of building permit fees and confirmation of its nonprofit status. Council had first heard the department’s proposal in March but put off a vote on a waiver of building fees until plans had been approved.
