In an epic battle of offense, the Milton Pat Knight major squad fell to a tough Lower Sussex team 11-9 July 23 in Georgetown.
Lower Sussex struck first when Jayce Marvel scored on a wild pitch. A two-out single by Matthew Namorato plated two more.
The Milton squad tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the second inning.
Lower Sussex blew open the game with five runs in the third and three more in the fourth. The Milton squad showed grit by not going away and scoring four in the fifth, but the Lower Sussex team held on to garner the 11-9 victory.
Lower Sussex was led by Layne Creppon and Brandon Hudson, who each drove in three runs. Matt Namorato added two, and Carter Hallam drove in a run with a double.
"I’m extremely proud of how our boys performed," said Lower Sussex manager Jay Futrell. "We had great pitching. All the way up and down the lineup, everyone was hitting. There wasn’t one star on our team, [as] they all played very, very well."
Jace Futrell toed the rubber for three innings, striking out three batters. Marvel came in from the bullpen and struck out six in two innings.
Milton's Mason Scisco and Preston Steele each pounded a double and knocked in two runs. Thomas Cunningham, Zack Faryna and Ryker Crenshaw added an RBI.
Milton righty Thomas Cunningham started on the mound and was relieved by Steele and Scisco.
"I’m very proud of the way the team performed tonight," said Milton manager Rich Dondarski. "It was just game one, so it will take some effort to get the boys to gel together. They were down late and could have quit, but showed a lot of resilience to come back and fight. We were right in the game until the end, but due to time limit, we weren’t able to get it done. We will come back Tuesday night, ready to get into a dogfight."
Both teams go at it Tuesday, July 28 in Georgetown.
