Milton publisher releases anthology on heels of Supreme Court ruling

August 24, 2019

Devil’s Party Press of Milton announced the release of a new collection of short fiction and poetry titled “What Sort of F*ckery Is This?”

The book’s title, which is published uncensored and is loosely based on a quote by Amy Winehouse, entered production in 2018. One common theme in the contents of “WSOFIT?” is the presence of obscenities in the title of each work.

Although planning for the anthology began near a year ago, the 364-page softcover collection arrives only weeks after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a law that barred scandalous trademarks, stating that government may not draw distinctions based upon the viewpoint of the speakers.

However, the court ruling was not the catalyst for the book title. DPP publisher Dianne Pearce noted that she never considered the title of her latest anthology to be controversial, but instead sees it as a statement against censorship as well as an acknowledgment of the life experiences, both good and bad, of her contributing authors.

In the book’s introduction, Pearce describes the authors’ works as representing “the voice of experience, of triumph, of tragedy, and of life,” saying, “WSOFIT? is a celebration of their unique badassery.” DPP works exclusively with authors over 40 years of age and, since 2017, has garnered both state and national awards.

“I was, frankly, impressed by how strongly this theme resonated with authors. Our call for submissions for ‘WSOFIT?’ yielded a far greater response than any previous call,” said DPP editor David Yurkovich. “Following an exhaustive review of the submissions received, we accepted over 50 original works, more than three times the amount of material we usually publish in a single collection. Production was challenging, but we’re pleased with the end product, and we think readers will enjoy the diversity and scope of works found between the covers.”

“WSOFIT?” is priced at $14.99 and can be found on Amazon and at select bookstores.
