Milton receives bids for Wagamon’s water main

Project was approved in July referendum
January 17, 2019

Milton officials have accepted bids from construction firms to build a water main extension from Federal Street to West Shore Drive, although a winning bidder has not been announced.

The proposed $395,000 project would build 1,600 feet of 10-inch PVC water main along an abandoned railway line from Federal Street to West Shore Drive. Town Manager Kristy Rogers said construction should begin in early February, weather permitting. Bids were received on Jan. 3, but town council did not vote on a winning bidder at its Jan. 7 meeting. Council could approve at bid at their next meeting, Monday, Feb. 4.

The town will be using a loan from the state Water Infrastructure Advisory Council to pay for the project, intended to improve water service throughout town and maintain water service in case of a main break in the Wagamon’s West Shores development. In June 2017, a water main break in Wagamon’s caused an outage lasting over four hours.

Before town officials could move forward with advertising for bids, town council had to approve a Pipe Occupancy Permit Dec. 3, allowing the town to install pipe in a state railroad right-of-way. The pathway for the pipe was recently cleared by the state as it will be used for the extension of the Rails To Trails, scheduled to begin construction in the summer.

Rogers said the town’s other large water infrastructure project - a new well and water treatment facility near Shipbuilder’s Village - will be released for bid in early 2019. The $500,000 project would create another well and treatment center outside the Federal Emergency Management Agency floodplain.

Both projects were overwhelmingly approved - 493 to 38 - by voters at a July referendum.
