Milton set to open bids on Shipbuilder’s well project

Kanakos, Garde and Cote to be sworn in at April 1 meeting
March 29, 2019

Milton officials plan to open bids for a proposed $500,000 well and treatment plant project at Shipbuilder’s Village Friday, March 29. Town council is scheduled to award the bid Monday, April 1.

The project includes drilling a new well outside the floodplain and building a new water treatment facility near Shipbuilder’s Village. The town was approved for a 20-year loan at 2 percent interest by the state’s Water Infrastructure Advisory Council for both the Shipbuilder’s project and a water main extension at Wagamon’s West Shores. The two projects were approved by a 493-38 margin in a June 2018 referendum.

In February, town council approved a $425,000 bid by Smyrna-based Zack Excavating to build the Wagamon’s water main. That bid came in $53,000 higher than town officials had expected; the project was estimated at $395,000, and an initial round of bids was rejected for being far higher than anticipated.

Mayor, councilmen to be sworn in

Town council’s April 1 meeting will begin with the swearing-in of Mayor Ted Kanakos and councilmen Sam Garde and Michael Cote to new three-year terms. Kanakos was first elected mayor in 2016, while Garde, who was appointed in 2014, will be serving his second full term. Cote will be serving his third consecutive term.

Council will announce the vice mayor, secretary and treasurer, and make appointments to committees, commissions and boards. In addition, council will announce the Lifetime Volunteer and Citizen of the Year awards, and hear a presentation from the Delaware Patriot Guard.

There will be a public hearing regarding an amendment to town code on calculation of permitted density in all districts.

Council will hear an advisory report from the planning and zoning commission regarding activities prohibited in all districts. A public hearing date will be set on an application for rezoning filed by Paulina Owedyk, 406 Hazzard St.

Finally, council will pass a resolution requesting an advisory report from the sustainability committee relating to solar panels and electric charging stations.
