Milton town manager: Officials monitoring roads during storm

Town plans to fix flooding issue next year
September 13, 2018

A section of Magnolia Street in Milton flooded so much Sept. 9-10 that it had to be closed to traffic.

The section of street between the library and Bodie’s Dairy Mart was blocked to traffic Sept. 10, with much of the municipal parking lot impassable. The end of the lot closest to Bodie’s frequently floods during storms because of drainage issues. The town plans to fix the flooding issue, but the $200,000 project is not slated to begin until next year.

Town Manager Kristy Rogers said all streets were open by the morning of Sept. 11 and will remain open. With Hurricane Florence expected to hit the East Coast, Rogers said the town is monitoring the roads 24 hours a day for closures as needed. She said sandbags have been set out since Sept. 7, and the public works department is preparing additional sandbags for use. Rogers said property owners should heed warnings and alerts to prepare for the weather.
