Milton water referendum set for July 21

Polls open at 8 a.m.
July 16, 2018

Milton officials are asking voters to approve borrowing $895,000 to pay for two water infrastructure projects.

Voters go to the polls Saturday, July 21. Voting will be held at Milton Town Hall, 115 Federal St., with polls open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Residents and property owners, including revocable trusts, partnerships and corporations, are entitled to vote.

The town hopes to fund two projects: a water main extension that will connect the main at Federal Street with mains in Wagamon’s West Shores; and a new well and treatment facility near Shipbuilder’s Village.

Town officials say the two projects will serve the whole town, improving drinking water quality, fire flow, and water service during and after large storms. The Shipbuilder’s well project would establish a new well and treatment facility outside the floodplain, while the Wagamon’s project is intended to improve reliability.

The town plans to borrow $500,000 for the Shipbuilder’s project and $395,000 for the Wagamon’s extension. The loan has been given preliminary approval by the state Water Infrastructure Advisory Council, but must be approved by the voters. The 20-year loan at 2 percent interest calls for two payments per year.

Town voting rules for referendums allow for nonresident property owners who own their property in a revocable trust, corporation or partnership to vote, but only one vote per property. Citizens can vote as a resident or nonresident property owner but not as both. Votes can be cast in person or by absentee ballot.
