Milton women’s club takes part in MLK Jr. Day of Service

New members welcome to support community needs
February 9, 2020

Women’s Club of Milton members collected and donated food items to Milton Community Food Pantry for the recent MLK Jr. Day of Service. Their activities reflect a challenge posed by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1957: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” In answer, the WCOM actively provides volunteer service opportunities and fundraising to enrich the lives of those in the community.

Several WCOM members regularly volunteer at the pantry, and this year, a few newer members spent time learning about the organization while helping pack boxes for the 400-plus people served by the MCFP each week.

The club also supports a number of local organizations and projects, including: Milton Fire Department and its Ladies Auxiliary, Milton Public Library, Summer Concerts in the Park, Bring Mayberry Back to Milton July 4th event, Comfort Bears for Children's Hospitals, CHHS Clothing Drive, Kent-Sussex Industries, Delaware Hospice Camp New Hope for bereaved children, H.O. Brittingham Elementary Reading Buddies, Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Program, and more.

Each year, the Women’s Club of Milton awards scholarships to college-bound 12th-grade girls residing within the Milton area. Scholarship awards are supported by a variety of club fundraisers.

The club welcomes new members, and anyone interested in finding out more can visit womensclubofmilton.org. The club meets at 1 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month September through May at the Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist, 307 Federal St., Milton. Check the website calendar for meeting details.

The WCOM is a member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, one of the world’s oldest and largest women's organizations dedicated to community improvement through volunteer service. Each club sets its own agenda, and works on projects and programs that address the specific needs of its communities. Women interested in joining the Women's Club of Milton may contact Linda King at lrking126@gmail.com.
