Mispillion Art League seeks helpers for Big Draw Festival Cardboard City project

Builders can submit creations Sept. 26; free art kit giveaway Oct. 3
September 22, 2020

The Mispillion Art League’s theme for the 2020 Big Draw Festival DE is A Climate of Change, and creating art using recycled materials is the goal. Organizers are inviting everyone, young and old, artists and non-artists, to help build a cardboard city.

MAL is partnering with the City of Milford to reinvent a community festival during a time when social distancing is important. Art league representatives will be set up from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 26, next to the Milford Farmers Market exit to hand out information about the festival and the Cardboard City project. Volunteers can build something real or imagined – their house, a store, a church, or something from their imagination – then bring their creations to MAL for display. MAL will post videos of the city as it grows with new buildings on its Facebook page.

The art league will be giving away free art kits while supplies last from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 3, containing a bilingual idea booklet with over a dozen art projects to do at home, along with a few art supplies to get started with. There will also be a bilingual tour booklet of the Mispillion Riverwalk Park, encouraging people to take photos and/or make sketches using the included sketchbook included or their own journal.

The City of Milford will provide educational materials for children Oct. 3 including a coloring book, crayons, stickers, and more, all centered around reducing, reusing, recycling, and respecting the environment. The Big Draw Art Kit and the City of Milford materials will be packaged in reusable bags. The Delaware Solid Waste Authority and the DuPont Nature Center will also provide educational materials. At the same time, the Milford Public Library will offer socially distanced art activities for children and teens at the library amphitheater.
