While good arguments have been made on the merits of renewable energy in regard to the proposed wind farm off the Delaware coast, constructing an inter-connection facility on the publicly owned and environmentally protected Fenwick Island State Park is a bad idea.
Making matters worse and underscoring a lack of sensitivity to the unvarnished and natural experience that’s unique to state parks, is DNREC’s idea to use lease money to further construct a nature center, visitor center, and/or chamber of commerce office.
The best part of Delaware State Parks is the recognition that the beach and the ocean are the stars of the show and any amenities should have inconspicuous, supporting roles in assisting the public to experience that. It would be better if funds for any improvements or maintenance come from the general fund and not as part of a land-lease deal.
