Mountaire Farms Inc., a leading chicken producer on Delmarva, is sending 40,000 pounds of chicken to North Carolina to help feed those in need after the devastation of Hurricane Florence.
The company is partnering with the nonprofit Operation BBQ Relief, a volunteer organization that mobilizes during disasters to cook hot meals for first responders, volunteers, and those impacted by the recent flooding.
Operation BBQ Relief, a group of competitive barbecue chefs, has set up mobile cooking locations in Wilmington and Fayetteville, N.C., and workers are expecting to feed up to 50,000 hot meals a day during the peak of the relief efforts.
Mountaire has also organized and sent truckloads of water and other supplies that were both purchased by the company and donated by employees to help affected employees in North Carolina in the aftermath of the storm.
“Our own facilities in North Carolina have been impacted by this storm, and some of our own employees are suffering. We are reaching out to help them, as well was working with other nonprofits to help the region,” said Chief Operating Officer Phillip Plylar. “This partnership with Operation BBQ Relief will help thousands, and we are proud to help those in need.”
The company’s processing plant in Lumber Bridge, N.C., reopened Sept. 18 after being closed for three and a half days due to the storm.
