NAACP hosts awards banquet

Winning the Unsung Hero Award was Denise Russ, a native of Milford, who was honored for her work on behalf of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Milford. Presenting the award is (l-r) the Rev. Jean Wylie, with Russ and Pandoria Ayers.
The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Naomi Young for her work helping needy families through The New Frontier program and St. Paul United Methodist Church. At the award presentation are (l-r) the Rev. Jean Wylie, Young and Pandoria Ayers.
The Milford/Slaughter Neck chapter of the NAACP hosted its 33rd annual Fight for Freedom awards banquet May 11 at Milford Senior Center.
With an overflow crowd of nearly 100 people, additional tables and chairs were set up to accommodate everyone. A keynote address by Fay Blake, founder and executive director of Pathways to Success, a nonprofit organization that helps mentor at-risk youth and their families, anchored the banquet, which also featured awards to community activists, students and church leaders.
