Nathaniel Johnson Jr., Postal Service retiree

It is with deepest regret to announce the passing of Nathaniel Johnson Jr. He was born Sept. 17, 1941, in Miller County, Ga., to the Rev. Nathaniel and Annie Pearl Johnson.  He was the third of four siblings. 

Brother Johnson was educated in Colquitt, Ga., where he graduated with honors and was class valedictorian.  After graduation, he attended Albert Merrill Institute in New York, N.Y., and completed technical courses in computer programming.  In addition, he continued his studies at Howard University, Washington D.C., for two years, and Herbert Lehman College in the Bronx, N.Y. for one year. Brother Johnson enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1959 and was stationed on the USS Gregory (DD-802) from early 1960 to August 1963 in San Diego, Calif. After completing his service in the Navy, Nathaniel went on to work for the Postal Service. He retired in 1997 after 35 years of service. 

Brother Johnson was saved at an early age and baptized by his father. He served as a junior usher and junior deacon at Mount Olive Baptist in Miller County. He later moved his membership to Bethel Baptist Church in Colquitt where his father became pastor. Brother Johnson remained a member there until he united with Mt. Enon Baptist in early 2000 where he was a faithful and willing member of the Lord. He served as a deacon, a trustee, an usher, and a member of the choir and brotherhood. He also occasionally assisted with cooking duties. 

He leaves behind his loving wife of 53 years, Mary Ann Johnson; three wonderful sons, Leonard, David and Donald, and his nephew/son Gregory; daughters in-law: Jane and Dessa; eight granddaughters: Jennifer, Monique, Teleia, Kali, Germaine, Tiffany, Whitney and Melanie; nine great-grandchildren: Deven, Jessica, Breanna, Jason, Christopher, Linque, Ashlyn, Taniah and Skyler; three great-great-grandchildren: Michaia, Mateo and Kade; goddaughters Tishara and Erica; siblings: Rev. John Johnson and wife Beulah, Betty White, Johnny Johnson and brother in-law James Banks; and extended family including, but not limited to, William Oliver, Gloria Jean Oliver, Peggy Coon, Veronica Jones, Deacon Fredrick Duffy, Theresa Harmon, Ursula Ball and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, Nov. 28, at noon at Mt. Enon Baptist Church, 600 N. Church St., Milford. Family and friends may visit two hours prior to the service.
