National Day of Service events continue Jan. 16, 18

January 13, 2021

The Presidential Inaugural Committee encourages everyone to sign up to volunteer for National Day of Service events taking place in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Whether people choose to participate in a contactless food drive, provide a meal for a family in need, or help assemble kits for underserved communities, there are endless opportunities to help out across the United States.

The Progressive Democrats of Sussex County will donate $100 in gift cards from a local supermarket for every $500 donated to Lighthouse for Broken Wings. This organization currently provides shelter in a local motel and hot meals for about 40 adults and 25 children who are homeless this winter. Each motel room costs $3,600 for a three-month stay. Make checks payable to Lighthouse for Broken Wings, and include postal and email addresses with donation. Mail a check as soon as possible to Joanne Cabry, 10 Sheffield Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. Checks and gift cards will be presented to Lighthouse for Broken Wings to honor Dr. King’s memory and to celebrate the leadership of the Biden-Harris administration.

A virtual informational session on how to get involved in the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service from the comfort of home as well as throughout Sussex County will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 16. The focus will be on organizations that need support. There will be a remote service project that attendees can directly participate in at the end of the session.
