National Theatre screening of ‘Small Island’ to open Dec. 7

December 4, 2019

Andrea Levy’s Orange Prize-winning novel “Small Island” comes to life in an epic new theatre adaptation.

“Small Island” embarks on a journey from Jamaica to Britain, through the Second World War to 1948-– the year the HMT Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury.

The play follows three intricately connected stories. Hortense yearns for a new life away from rural Jamaica, Gilbert dreams of becoming a lawyer, and Queenie longs to escape her Lincolnshire roots. Hope and humanity meet stubborn reality as the play traces the tangled history of Jamaica and the United Kingdom.

A company of 40 actors take to the stage of the National Theatre in this timely and moving story.

The screenings will be at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7; 12:30 p.m., Monday, Dec 9; 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec 10. Admission is $18 for film society members, $20 general admission and $15 for ages 15 and under. Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets online. If seats are available, tickets can be purchased at the theater 30 minutes before the screening.
