We are writing in support of maintaining the menhaden fish net reel at the Lewes Historical Society.
As has been the case, we are sure, for many others, seeing the fish net reel a few years ago opened the door to our learning about the fascinating economic and African American histories of Lewes.
Until then, we had no idea about the central place of Lewes in the early 20th century American fishing industry, nor about the vibrant African American community that was home to fishermen, factory workers, groceries, barber shops, playgrounds and churches.
It was seeing the fish net reel that prompted us to appreciate that history.
And that’s precisely what the role of a historical society should be: to spark curiosity, and promote research and learning.
How appropriate it is for the Lewes Historical Society to have rescued and reconstructed the fish net reel on its grounds.
It is unthinkable that the town powers-that-be cannot appreciate what a gift to Lewes’ citizens and visitors the fish net reel is.
