New Cape High Assistant Principal Kristin DeGregory says she’s ready for a fresh start in a new place.

“I’ve lived in Newark my whole life, so coming to Cape is exciting professionally and personally for me,” she said. “I heard such great things about the community, district and high school. I’m excited for the adventure.”

DeGregory joins Cape from Newark High, where she was assistant principal for eight years. Before that, she was a gifted and talented coordinator for four years, and science teacher at Shue-Medill Middle School in Newark for 11 years.

“I became interested in an administrative position because I was always interested in the structure and process of a school as a whole,” she said. “I thought I could make an impact on the larger school and community.”

A St. Mark’s High grad, DeGregory earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a focus on middle school science instruction from the University of Delaware. She received her master’s degree in education from Wilmington University, and holds certifications in leadership, and in gifted and talented education.

DeGregory said she wants to live in the community where she works, so a house-hunt is underway. She said her daughter Gianna, a rising senior, will complete her high school years at Newark High, and the family will find a permanent home in the Cape Region at some point during the school year.

In the meantime, DeGregory said, she and her younger children, rising Cape High freshmen Joey and Devon, will stay with family during the week; her husband Joe is a teacher at Newark High.

DeGregory said she has spent time during the COVID-19 lockdown to work on her cooking and gardening skills.

“I will enjoy getting a new house to do all that, and hope to pick up new hobbies,” she said. “I’m excited everything seemed to line up so well. It’s just been a perfect fit, and they even offered the job to me on my birthday! Things just happened the way they should happen.”
