New Hope summer youth program receives FACES grant

June 19, 2019

New Hope Recreation and Development Center in Ellendale has been awarded a 2019 Freeman Foundation FACES grant of $5,000. Through the generosity of the Freeman Foundation, the organization will be able to serve the youth of  the community with a quality academic and social program.

The Freeman Assists Communities with Extra Support award will be used to fund the New Hope Summer Program, which will run Monday, June 24 to Thursday, July 25. Youth will be challenged by a rigorous academic program that focuses on math, science and reading. Older youth will participate in a book club that focuses on group discussion and critical analysis of the book and author’s writing style.

Delaware Bookmobile also will visit the center every two weeks to supply books, magazines and videos. Each week’s activities will correspond with assigned themes.

Recreational activities include arts and crafts, movies, basketball, and Olympic and water games as well as off-site activities of skating, swimming and golfing. Students will also enjoy a trip to Funland in Rehoboth Beach and Splash Mountain in Ocean City, Md.

The program culminates with an awards ceremony to honor students for participation and academic achievements. The hard work and dedication of the center’s volunteer staff also contributes to the success of the summer program. The New Hope Recreation and Development Center is at 12564 N. Old State Road, Ellendale.
