The following letter was sent o Drew McKay of the Lewes Planning Commission, with a copy submitted to the Cape Gazette for publication.
On the basis of recent comments concerning New Road, it makes sense to determine the hazards and best course of action before plans are finalized.
My concerns are: changes to New Road would increase traffic density on both New Road and Savannah Road.
Additional proposed town houses would only increase traffic. Removal of trees along wetlands would also increase the groundwater contamination threat. Flooding would increase the problems of wetlands that should not be considered in density calculations. Contamination of Canary Creek would also impact the Great Marsh.
All the above affect New Road residents. Property value, traffic congestion and contamination will be just a few of the many problems.
The construction of 90 dwellings, each three stories, adds to potential density problems on New Road.
New Road was never intended to become a major thoroughfare in or out of Lewes. However, with summer traffic including trailered boats, New Road will become another major thoroughfare. If 90 dwellings are constructed, the impact on New Road and all of Lewes will be significant.
