Sussex offices to close three hours Dec. 7
Sussex County offices will close from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, for employees to attend the annual Mildred King Luncheon, a time set aside to recognize county employees for their service. The event is named in honor of former employee Mildred King, who served Sussex County for nearly 30 years.

Milton planning and zoning to meet Nov. 20
Milton Planning and Zoning Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Milton library to hear a special permitted-use request for an office on Broad Street. Philip Finestrauss, doing business as Philip M. Finestrauss P.A., is requesting a special permitted use to allow for a home occupation as a professional office at 112 Broad St. The commission will discuss and possibly create an advisory report on a proposed amendment to the zoning code regulating temporary structures.

Cape Gazette posts early deadlines
Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the Cape Gazette has posted early deadlines for the Friday, Nov. 23 and Tuesday, Nov. 27 editions. The retail advertising deadline for the Nov. 23 edition is noon, Monday, Nov. 19. The classified advertising deadline is noon, Tuesday, Nov. 20. The retail advertising deadline for the Tuesday, Nov. 27 edition is noon, Wednesday, Nov. 21. The classified advertising deadline is also noon, Wednesday, Nov. 21. The Cape Gazette offices will be closed Thursday and Friday, Nov. 22 and 23.

Rehoboth animal issues committee meeting set Nov. 20
The Rehoboth Beach Animal Issues Committee has scheduled a meeting for 2 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 20, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for a review of information on the city website, the status of a city code review and a review of the city’s trap, neuter and release program. Rehoboth audit committee to meet Nov. 20
The Rehoboth Beach Audit Committee has scheduled a meeting for 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 20, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave. The agenda calls for a presentation of the city audit ending March 31, 2018. Rehoboth announces Thanksgiving schedule
In observance of Thanksgiving, Rehoboth Beach City Hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave., will be closed Thursday, Nov. 22, and Friday, Nov. 23.
There will be no residential trash pickup Thursday, Nov. 22. Regular trash pickup will resume citywide Friday, Nov. 23. Visit cityofrehoboth.com for a trash collection calendar. Sussex offices closed for Thanksgiving
Sussex County government offices will be closed Thursday, Nov. 22, and Friday, Nov. 23, for the Thanksgiving holiday. Offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 26.

No Sussex council meeting on Nov. 20
Sussex County Council will not meet Tuesday, Nov. 20, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. The next regularly scheduled meeting is at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 27, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown.

Sussex council awards nonprofit grants
Sussex County Council awarded the following councilmanic grants during its Nov. 13 meeting: $1,860 to Grace-N-Mercy Ministries for its community Thanksgiving dinner; $600 to Town of Blades for the annual children’s Christmas party; and $500 to Seaford Elite Travel Football Club for competition expenses.

Dewey authorizes donation to RBVFC
Dewey Beach commissioners voted unanimously during the Nov. 10 meeting to approve a donation of $5,000 to the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company in appreciation of its dedicated and continued service to the community.

Rehoboth launches Toys for Tots campaign
The City of Rehoboth Beach is accepting toy donations for the Toys for Tots Program during business hours through Tuesday, Dec. 4.
Toys for Tots Christmas boxes are in the lobby of city hall and the lobby of the Rehoboth Police Department, both at 229 Rehoboth Ave. New, unwrapped toys are accepted. Henlopen Acres announces Thanksgiving schedule
In observance of Thanksgiving, Henlopen Acres Town Hall, 104 Tidewaters, will be closed Thursday, Nov. 22, and Friday, Nov. 23.

DART’s approved changes begin Dec. 9
During several community conversations and public hearings, DART listened to its riders and the public; as a result, changes were made to its original proposal. Visit DartFirstState.com for accessible schedules for easy reference. Sussex County routes may have minor schedule adjustments to improve on-time performance and connections. Routes 201 and 204 start one hour earlier at 6 a.m. for better connections with Routes 206 and 307. Routes 212 and 215 schedules will be adjusted to improve on-time performance and time between stops. DART will operate a reduced service schedule on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve; consult the website and schedules, when they are available, for specific details.

Prime Hook area closed Nov. 17 for deer hunt
The public-use area of Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, which includes the Visitor Contact Station, will be closed all day Saturday, Nov. 17, due to deer hunting. Only permitted hunters will have access to the Headquarters Area. Plan visits accordingly. For more information, call the refuge office at 302-684-8419.

DRBA commissioners public meeting set
A public board meeting of the Commissioners of the Delaware River and Bay Authority will be held Tuesday, Nov. 20, in the James Julian Boardroom in the DRBA Administration Building, New Castle. The board meeting generally begins shortly after the completion of committee meetings, which may be between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. unless otherwise noted; however, in no event will the public meeting commence earlier than 10 a.m. Committee meetings begin at 9 a.m. the same date and location as the board meeting. 36th District Democrats to meet Nov. 19
The 36th Representative District Democratic Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 19, at Arena’s Restaurant in Milford. The operating budget for 2019 and strategies to move forward will be discussed. All registered Democrats in the Sussex County 36th RD are encouraged to attend and bring friends. Attendees can enjoy the optional Dutch treat dinner to support Arena’s, which provides the meeting space.  

ABCC hearing Nov. 20 for Chaps Pit Beef
The Delaware Alcoholic Beverage Control Commissioner has scheduled a public protest hearing for 5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 20, to review the protested application of Chaps Pit Beef, 19791 Coastal Highway, Rehoboth. Chaps has applied for a Restaurant, Sunday and Patio license, permitting the sale, service and consumption of alcohol. The applicant has also applied for patio variances to permit external speakers, a paging system, live entertainment and a wet bar on the patio. The hearing will be held at the Sussex County Administrative Building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown.

Rehoboth’s Jeney earns floodplain certification
Rehoboth Beach Code Enforcement Officer Dennis Jeney is now a certified floodplain manager under the Association of State Floodplain Managers’ Certified Floodplain Manager Program. The national program was established for professional certification of floodplain managers, to recognize continuing education and professional development in the knowledge and performance of local, state, federal and private-sector floodplain managers. This certification is awarded by the ASFPM directly to individuals who apply and successfully pass a comprehensive examination of the national programs and standards to reduce flood losses in the nation.

Jeney will use his new certification to assist municipal clients with floodplain management, including the preparation of updated floodplain management ordinances and compliance with the requirements for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program Community Rating System.
