Sussex to open seasonal EMS unit

At its April 26 meeting, Sussex County Council unanimously approved a lease agreement with the Town of Dewey Beach for a one-person daytime paramedic unit in a town-owned building. Calls for emergency medical service in the Dewey-Lewes-Rehoboth area in July 2021 averaged 21 per day, compared to the overall county average of 10 responses per day.

The county will pay $500 to cover utility costs.

Rehoboth approves, denies tree removals

The Rehoboth Beach Parks and Shade Tree Commission approved the removal of two trees and denied the removal of another tree during a meeting April 25.

In the first case, for 36 Delaware Ave., the commission approved the removal of two trees – a 58-inch-diameter mulberry and an 18-inch-diameter oak. The removal of the trees left the property short of the city’s minimum-density tree requirements by roughly 11 trees. As a result, the commission called for the planting of one tree in the front yard and a fee in lieu of mitigation for the remaining 10 trees, at a cost of $800 per tree.

In the second case, for 305 Sandalwood, the commission denied the removal of a 24-inch-diameter river birch tree. The owner of the property said the request came as a safety measure, because the tree dropped a lot of leaves and branches into the pool in his backyard. Ultimately, the commission denied the application because it was a tree being a tree and suggested the property owner undertake a rigorous pruning plan.
