Running of the Bull to cause traffic delays

The Delaware Department of Transportation warns motorists of expected delays and increased pedestrian activity around 1 p.m., Saturday, June 25, on Route 1 in Dewey Beach for the 25th annual Running of the Bull. The festival will begin at The Starboard, 2009 Coastal Highway.

When runners return, they will cross with a pedestrian signal to minimize further traffic disruption.

Lewes planners elect new officers

The Lewes Planning Commission elected new officers June 15. They include Nancy Staisey as chair, Melanie Moser as vice chair and Bob Heffernan continuing as secretary.

Lewes to seek grants for flood mitigation

Lewes mayor and council voted unanimously June 13 to seek grant funds for a multimillion-dollar flood mitigation project on Cedar Street.

They authorized allowing George, Miles and Buhr to explore a 75/25 matching grant with the Delaware Emergency Management Agency for the study and construction of earthen berms and self-regulating tide gates along the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal to mitigate flooding caused by encroaching water from Roosevelt Inlet.

Application costs to the city would be roughly $5,000, while total costs, after construction and including maintenance, would be about $600,000. Officials say constructing these systems would positively impact insurance rates.

Lewes officials, park residents to meet

The City of Lewes will hold a meeting at 6:30 p.m., Monday, June 27, at City Hall for residents of Donovan-Smith Manufactured Home Park to learn about city services. Park residents are encouraged to attend and ask questions.

Lewes Parks & Rec to meet June 27

The Lewes Parks & Recreation Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m., Monday, June 27 at the Rollins Center.

Members will hear updates on the Public Art Committee, Friends of Canalfront Park and Lewes Community Garden.

The agenda includes discussion and possible votes on the new Recreational Activities Policy Draft covering activities and fee schedules at city parks and beaches; and on the Lawn and Landscaping Maintenance Contract Specifications.

Rehoboth BoA to hear variance requests

The Rehoboth Beach Board of Adjustment will meet at 2:30 p.m., Monday, June 27, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave.

The agenda includes three hearings.

The first is a continuation of a case at 80 Oak Ave., where the property owners seek a variance to allow a structure to be placed within the 50-foot required rear-yard setback.

The second is for a case at 9 Sixth St., where property owners have requested a variance to allow a second-floor addition to encroach 3-feet-10-inches into the 15-foot rear-yard setback.

The third hearing involves the property at 23 Kent St., where owners have requested a variance to allow an increase in lot coverage from 2,767 square feet to 2,799 square feet.

Rehoboth Boardwalk committee to meet

The Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk and Beach Committee will meet at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 29, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave.

The agenda calls for continued development of Boardwalk and beach information and guidelines for eventual inclusion on an updated city website.

Sussex council awards nonprofit grants

Sussex County Council awarded the following councilmanic grants during its June 21 meeting: $7,500 to Nanticoke Indian Association for its 44th annual powwow; $6,300 to Slaughter Neck Community Action Organization to upgrade its playground equipment; $1,000 to Greenwood Police Department for Night Out; $3,500 to West Rehoboth Community Land Trust for low-income housing maintenance; $5,000 to Christian Storehouse in Millsboro for operating expenses; $2,000 to Georgetown Historical Society for an HVAC system for its new Western Auto and Train Museum; $1,800 to West Side New Beginnings for street lights in the West Rehoboth community; and $750 to Town of Blades for Night Out.

Rental program on Sussex agenda

Sussex County Council will meet at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 28, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown.

Included on the agenda is an 11 a.m. public hearing on an amended Sussex County rental unit program. Council will also discuss American Rescue Plan Act grant awards and possibly vote on three applications filed by Henlopen Properties LLC for the Mitchell’s Corner mixed-use development along Kings Highway and Gills Neck Road, Lewes.
