Nicholas R. Brown, proud veteran

January 18, 2023

Nicholas R. Brown, 77, of Lewes, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023. He was born April 18, 1945, in Dover, son of the late Charles Cahall and Mary (Salmons) Brown.

A native Delawarean, after high school, Nicholas attended Dickenson College in Carlisle, Pa., graduating in 1967. He went on to further his education and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Delaware in Newark. A proud veteran, Nicholas answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the U.S. Army, and bravely fought in the Vietnam War, after which he was awarded the Purple Heart in 1969. Following his honorable discharge, he began a long and fulfilling career as a professor at Goucher College in Baltimore, Md., teaching environmental studies and political science, and was a beloved teacher and colleague. Nicholas was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and became a Delaware Master Gardener. He used those horticultural talents to help construct raised-bed gardens for Home of the Brave in Milford. He was passionate about helping his fellow veterans, and he served briefly on the board of Home of the Brave. Nicholas was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, professor, colleague, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.

Nicholas is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara J. Brown; his son, Benjamin Brown; his grandson, Bennett Brown; Bennett’s mother, Patricia Brown; his sister, Sally Brown; his nephew, Justin Brown; and his niece, Adrian Brown.
