Born June 21, 1927, he was raised in Cambridge, Md., on the Eastern Shore, Norm had a love for boating, antique cars and coins. Norman joined the Navy at an early age (17) during the latter part of World War II, and served as a load specialist with the Naval Air Transport and in charge of bumping guys who were getting hops out of Guam, favoring the lower ranked servicemen. At the end of World War II, he turned down a position in San Francisco with a fledgling airline (United), favoring to go back home to the Eastern Shore. He emigrated to Delaware to attend Goldey Beacom Business College in Wilmington, and married his wife, Mary (Stuart) Travers in 1953.

He and Mary started their family in Claymont, working and retiring as an auditor with the State of Delaware Division of Health and Social Services in 1986. Norman was an active band booster and chaperone on band competition trips for the Claymont Flaming Arrow High School Band in the 1970s, and developed many life-long friendships among the band students who nicknamed him “Stormin’ Norman.” He was also a longtime member of the vestry in the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Claymont.

After retirement from the state in 1986, Norman and Mary moved to Rehoboth Beach, where they made many new friends. In 2005, Norman and Mary moved to the Madison, Ala., area near Huntsville and their daughter’s family. Norman resided in the Floyd E Tut Fann V.A. Home in Huntsville for the last nine months of his life.

Instead of a funeral, the family will be hosting a memorial service at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Madison Jan. 19, 2019, and a celebration of life in Delaware at a time and place to be named. In lieu of flowers, the family asks everyone to please keep Norman in their prayers.
