Norman Oliver’s Turkey Giveaway celebrates 37 years

December 7, 2019

Norman Oliver’s Statewide Turkey Giveaway stopped in Georgetown Nov. 26 to give away turkeys to nonprofits and individuals. For 37 years, Norman Oliver has led an effort in Wilmington to organize a holiday turkey giveaway to assist families and seniors. This year, Oliver continues a statewide effort of providing 6,000 families with turkeys in Wilmington, New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties.

This is the biggest and boldest goal for Oliver after starting nearly four decades ago by feeding four homeless men under a bridge in Wilmington. “For more than three decades, Our Youth Inc. and Nor Enterprises have fed thousands of families and seniors for the Thanksgiving holiday,” said Oliver. “We have been able to take this effort statewide again because of the support of numerous companies and organizations and especially our lead sponsor, Food Lion, for their continued support of this event and their commitment to feed families in Delaware.”

Today, with several dozen community partners, friends, family and high school volunteers, the Turkey Giveaway has grown to allow Norman and his supporters to donate and deliver approximately 6,000 turkeys to families throughout Delaware for Thanksgiving this year.
