The first Little League all-star team from the Cape Region to start play in District 3 tournaments was also the first squad to reach the finals in its bracket.
Cape major all-stars toppled Woodbridge 7-1 in the quarterfinals June 29 and doubled up their friends on the Georgetown team 10-5 June 30 in the semifinals before falling to a loaded Lower Sussex softball team 6-1 in the championship round.
Pyper Willey was in the circle for Cape against Woodbridge and worked with her catcher Jordan Price to collect a dozen strikeouts. Willey helped herself at the plate by tying Gia Scott’s two runs and Hannah Harstein’s two hits for the team lead.
Willey and the defense needed to be on their game as Woodbridge hung around before Maddie Brown’s triple brought in two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Brown stole home on the next pitch and the defense held on in the bottom half of the inning for a 7-1 win.
Abbey Frey was toeing the rubber for Cape in the Georgetown contest, and she managed to strike out nine while surrendering just two hits in the 10-5 semifinal victory.
Frey led the charge on offense with two hits, sharing the top spot with Addie Bekeshka and Price. Bekeshka drove in a game-high four runs and led all runners with two steals. Brinley Marks and Price each scored two runs for a team high.
In the final, Lower Sussex used a three-run first inning to separate themselves for a 6-1 victory.
