Overfalls Foundation to kick off new kids’ programs June 19

June 13, 2019

Overfalls Foundation team members are excited to announce a series of three summer programs for children ranging in age from 6-12.

The first program, titled Flag Fun, for children ages 8-12, each with an accompanying adult, is scheduled for two sessions, Wednesday, June 19. It will explore the art of communication between vessels at sea using a series of signal flags as well as other methods of communication aboard lightships. The take-home craft will be marine signal flags. Participants may register either for the session from 9 to 10:30 a.m., or for the session from 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Each workshop will provide children and their parents an intimate opportunity to explore the Lightship Overfalls while learning about the history of lightships, and the life and challenges of the sailors who served aboard them. Lightships and their crews played a vital role in the safety and success of marine travel and commerce over the past two centuries.

The programs will include tours of the lightship and a special craft or activity reinforcing the information presented. Role playing and hands-on activities will be featured in each of the monthly sessions.

Organizers hope these classes will stimulate further interest in learning more about area history and the value of preserving its stories for the future.

The cost for each workshop is $5 per child. Each student must be accompanied by an adult. For more information or to register for either session, call 302-379-0072 or go to www.overfalls.org.

The mission of the Overfalls Foundation is to collect, preserve and teach the maritime history of the Delmarva region.
